I find Snyder definitely stuck in the past and perhaps even Russophobic; the two seem to go hand in hand. He's also inconsistent in that his previous criticisms of Ukraine's far right completely disappeared in favour of demonizing Putin as fascist. Not exactly even handed considering the fact that the far right is on the march in both places, and everywhere actually. Yeah, it's kind of weird to me. In that lecture, when he talks about the current policy calculations that countries are making, he seems to rely on simplistic analogies. And part of the problem is that he tries to see international relations through the Democracies vs. Autocracies framework. It's sort of a "clash of civilizations" view that leaves out an awful lot of what's relevant when it comes to war.
